A Brief History

Helping each other create a brighter future

Foundings

Neighborhood Youth Achievers (NYA) is an outgrowth of the successful
Department of Justice Weed & Seed Program. It began in 2002 and
incorporated in 2003. NYA was founded on the belief that our youth are
our best hope for a bright and boundless future. That pervasive spirit is
embodied in our work with the children, youth and young adults in the
community we serve.
NYA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated and committed to
developing character, improving academic performance, enhancing
citizenship, promoting volunteerism, and encouraging the pursuit of
professional and personal development for youth and young adults in the
Watts community of Los Angeles, California.
NYA is unique in that it is designed for young men and women willing to try
something different and who believe that their own self expression is their
greatest gift. In turn, individuals will be expected to give back what they
have received by becoming active members of their future college
campuses, trade schools, professions, and community.

Resources:

As a resource agency, NYA recognizes that collaboration is central to our success and ensures that we are able to leverage our assets to provide our community with the best opportunities and resources available. NYA actively collaborates with its network of CBOs, public agencies, districts, authorities, schools, universities and other non-profits as well as for-profit corporations to provide a diverse assortment of assistance.

Philosophy

The NYA approach is simple: We address public health, employment, educational support and employment opportunities in a holistic framework that focus on the youth as well as the entire family. Because our goal is to improve the entire individual, all of our programs emphasize the Six Pillars of Character (Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship).

Goals

To provide comprehensive health care, educate and provide employment opportunities that help improve the entire family's career readiness. Provide opportunities for success, and family mental, physical, psychological/emotional and financial health.

“From the moment you walk into our office you are immediately made aware that you are being welcomed to join our family of community benefactors.”
